Can anyone tell if this is real

He's selling it as a real one but aren't the Chinese cranking these out by the 100s? |
Re: Can anyone tell if this is real
It looks real.
Its not a valuble coin and I can't see why the Chinese would be cranking out an old beat up silver half dollar? They could make a very nice 1836 silver half dollar and try to get (or get)thousands for it. I would guess its real? |
Re: Can anyone tell if this is real
DONT BUY COINS ONLINE! That coin is one that the Chinese fakes have produced. Numismatic coins need to be bought and examined by experts. The exact weight of the coin is difficult to duplicate in fakes. Don't buy rare coins online. They're even duplicating the coin holders now. Search PCGS's website for a look at the manufacturing of fake coins out of China. It's scary.

Re: Can anyone tell if this is real
I've looked at the coin operation on bubbleshare and it is scary. Common dated coins receive less attention than rare dates so they can sell many of them rather than chance one sale with hi risk of getting caught.
What I notice in a lot of the fakes shown is that the devices are made to show a worn coiin, thus supportiing its authenticity by "circulation" but the fields appear almost perfect without having a lot of bag marks or scraches that would go along with the wear. A guy from work just got back from 2 weeks in Germany. While there he went to a local market and bought 4 coins from a street vendor, against the advice of my buddy who I had warned about these things. He was so proud of the valuable old US coins he found and repatriated, until I looked at them. They were obviously inderweight and failed the ring test, among other things but they looked convinciing and felt about right to someone who doesn't know. For about $25 each, he is the proud owner of: Worn 1903 American Silver Eagle (wonder if they made any proof) 1872 Trade Dollar (didn't start making them until 1873) 1896 Morgan in XF (what would that be worth if real) 1922 Peace (this one is scary it was pretty convincing and could have been real but considering the company it was with)... If you don't know what your buying don't buy it |

Re: Can anyone tell if this is real
It cracks me up that the customs guys can manage to confiscate an airsoft pistol with a trademarked logo, but can't stop thousands of fake U.S. coins from coming in. Keep up the good work boys!
